KUALA LUMPUR: The European Union (EU) Commission applauds Malaysia’s double achievements in aviation with its re-election to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council and reinstatement to Category 1 of the United States International Aviation Safety Assessment Programme.

In a Facebook post Sunday (Oct 16), Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the Malaysian delegation had a bilateral meeting with Directorate-General MOVE at the end of the first day of the 28th Asean Transport Ministers Meeting in Bali.

This is the EU Commission’s department responsible for EU policy on mobility and transport.

“The delegation’s chief Henrik Hololei – who is also the director general of MOVE – praised and applauded Malaysia’s double achievements in aviation,” said Dr Wee.

“We agreed to explore further ways to work together under the Transport Ministry to push the the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (Corsia) agenda,” he added.

Dr Wee said that this would mean the development of sustainable aviation fuels while making it more accessible and affordable for aviation industry players in the future.

He added that they also discussed the way forward between Malaysia and the EU in transport and logistics while working with the many European companies already present in Malaysia.

“I also invited the EC to take part in the upcoming LIMA event in May next year,” he said.

In an unrelated matter, Dr Wee said South Korea has reiterated its commitment to share its experiences and best practices to enhance transport systems in Asean countries.

He said in another Facebook post that South Korea would also share its experiences in other related activities under the Asean – South Korea Transport Cooperation Roadmap 2022-2025.

“During the 28th AseanTransport Ministers Meeting in Bali today, we also attended in tandem the 13th Asean and South Korea Transport Ministers Meeting,” he said.

Dr Wee added that in his intervention – or remarks made during proceedings – on behalf of Malaysia, he put on the record South Korea’s 30 years of cooperation with Asean since 1991.

“The Republic has been instrumental in providing assistance, development consulting, feasibility studies, and knowledge exchanges to Asean Member States, including Malaysia,” he said.

He added that they looked forward to a fruitful conclusion of the Asean- South Korea Air Services Agreement for a mutually beneficial agreement for more connectivity between and beyond Asean and South Korea during the G20 Meeting tomorrow in Bali as well.

“Malaysia will continue to support closer coordination between Asean Member States and South Korea in implementing the Roadmap,” he said.

The 13th Asean – South Korea Transport Ministers Meeting was jointly chaired by Secretary General, Ministry of Transportation Indonesia Novie Riyanto Rahardjo and South Korea Vice Minister cum Chair of Metropolitan Transport Commission, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Lee Seonghai.
