The Port of Rotterdam and Spanish oil group Cespa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the first green hydrogen corridor between Southern and Northern Europe. The trade lane is expected to be operational by 2027, exporting Hydrogen from Spain to the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The corridor will ensure a steady supply of hydrogen between two of Europe’s important ports, Rotterdam and Algeciras. The port stated that it could supply Northwestern Europe with 4.6 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2030. This will lead to a CO2 reduction of 46 million tonnes per year.
Cespa intends to export the hydrogen produced at its San Roque Energy Park near the Bay of Algeciras utilizing mediums such as ammonia or methanol to the Port of Rotterdam.
The port of Rotterdam stated in a recent statement that green fuels were the way to decarbonize the maritime industry in the Bay of Algeciras and Rotterdam. This would also concurrently support the European Union’s RePower EU Strategy, which seeks to ensure Europe’s energy security while stimulating clean energy production.
The Port Authority of the port of Rotterdam is teaming with private companies and constructing the necessary infrastructure and facilities to import and export Green hydrogen. The move is a part of Rotterdam’s Energy Transition plans and has garnered huge support from the Dutch government.
