Following further news on Malaysia’s aim to become an ASEAN EV hub, and SelangorJohor and Negeri Sembilan ramping up on EV charging infrastructure, Pahang has chimed in, with state investment, industry, science, technology and innovation committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Najib saying that the state aspires to become the East Coast’s EV assembly and manufacturing hub, Bernama reports.

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, 10,663 EVs were sold in the first half of 2024 – a 142% jump over the 4,409 sold in the same period last year, he said.

“The surge in EV usage marks a clear shift in the automotive market. In fact, states on the West Coast such as Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka have become the choice of electric vehicle manufacturers to build assembly and manufacturing plants due to logistics factors.

“We also want to see Pahang become a hub for the assembly and manufacturing of electric vehicles in the East Coast. If logistics is a major criterion, then we will strengthen the promotion of the logistics network and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) which connects Port Klang and Kuantan Port,” Mohamad Nizar said when winding up yesterday’s 2025 Pahang budget debate at the State Legislative Assembly.

He added that Perbadanan Setiausaha Kerajaan Pahang this year signed a collaboration to develop 50 EV charging stations throughout Pahang with an estimated investment of RM250 million. Bentong will be the pilot district, with 12 charging stations to be built there first.
