KUCHING (Feb 24): Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) has achieved an impressive growth trajectory, recording a 6.4 per cent increase in total cargo throughput, reaching 52 million tonnes in 2024, up from 48 million tonnes in 2023.

This milestone underscores BPHB’s position as a regional logistics powerhouse, driving Sarawak’s economic expansion and industrial development, said chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.

“Our role in Sarawak’s long-term development is clear: we are the critical infrastructure that connects Sarawak’s industries to the world.

“Whether it’s energy, petrochemicals, or clean energy, Bintulu Port is ready to support and drive Sarawak’s ambitions forward,” said the State Secretary when highlighting the port’s transformation and strategic direction under Sarawak’s jurisdiction during the Bintulu Port media appreciation night even here yesterday.

Mohamad Abu Bakar said Bintulu Port’s strategic focus will remain on three core pillars: operational excellence, growth and sustainability, and stakeholder management.

Its continued expansion aligns with Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to position the state as a global trade and energy leader.

The port’s enhanced infrastructure and services are set to boost regional connectivity and facilitate trade growth across various sectors.

“For everyone’s information, I want to share just to avoid some confusion. We are Bintulu Port Berhad, that is the operator of Bintulu Port.

“The one that we took over from the federal government is Bintulu Port Authority. I hope you don’t get it confused,” he explained, underscoring the company’s operational role and transition under state jurisdiction.

He added that Bintulu Port has also embraced digital transformation, becoming the first port in Malaysia to deploy autonomous nested drones for advanced surveillance.

It has also introduced BookAjak, a centralised mobile application for seamless service bookings.

“If you have the opportunity to go to Bintulu Port, you can see how it operates. We call it BookAjak, a centralised mobile application for seamless booking of various services.

“It’s another testament to our commitment to digital transformation, proudly developed by our own in-house talent,” he noted.

Commenting further, Mohamad Abu Bakar said BPHB’s excellence has been recognised with multiple awards in 2024, including the BrandLaureate Best Brands Award in the maritime services category, the Platinum Award for Large Enterprise at the Bintulu Sustainability Awards, and the Green Terminal Label Certification from Bureau Veritas.

The port has further solidified its status as a key logistics hub with the establishment of the Bintulu Car Terminal and Borneo Oil and Gas Supply Base Sdn Bhd, supporting Sarawak’s petrochemical industry.

“If you all still remember in 2024, we invited The Right Honorable Premier to officiate our Borneo Oil and Gas Supply Base Sdn Bhd, that is a supply base in Bintulu. This is the first one in Bintulu,” he shared.

As Sarawak embarks on a transformative period, Bintulu Port remains at the forefront, leveraging its transition to state jurisdiction as an opportunity to enhance its contributions to the economy and global trade.

“This new chapter is not just about governance; it is about positioning Bintulu Port as a key driver of Sarawak’s economic ambitions.

“With a renewed focus on operational excellence, strategic expansion, and long-term value creation, we are committed to ensuring Bintulu Port remains a vital gateway for trade, industrial growth, and sustainable economic progress for Sarawak and Malaysia,” he added.
