PASIR GUDANG, Sept 19 — Johor Port Bhd, a member of the MMC Group, has strengthened its container handling capabilities with a RM71.2 million investment in two new Post Panamax container quay cranes manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC).

In a statement today, Johor Port said the investment reflects its commitment to enhancing efficiency and competitiveness as a premier multi-purpose port in the region.

“The new cranes are engineered to handle the port’s growing container throughput with greater speed and precision.

“These cranes, built at ZPMC’s facility in Changxing Island, Shanghai, are designed to manage Post Panamax vessels, and will be able to ensure consistent reliability and enhanced turnaround time for vessels calling at Johor Port,” the statement said.

Johor Port chief executive officer Md Derick Basir said the arrival of the two cranes reflects the port’s long-term vision to invest in modern infrastructure to support global trade’s evolving needs. It will invest in an additional two quay cranes targeted to be operational in 2027.

“We recently purchased four new level luffing cranes in June 2025 for RM72.3 million to be installed at our conventional terminal.”

Meanwhile, Johor Port chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said the investment in quay cranes and level luffing cranes is part of a five-year capital expenditure enhancement plan to enhance port activities.

The investment also supports the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiative as it will provide first-class infrastructure, improve port operational capacity, cargo handling efficiency, and overall service reliability, Che Khalib said.

He said the investment will also help attract new business and investment to JS-SEZ, stimulate regional economic activity, and create trade and job opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Association of Malaysian Hauliers vice-president Dzulfariqh Abdul Manap said the investment and Johor Port’s modernisation initiative will improve berth productivity, reduce vessel and truck turnaround time, and facilitate a seamless and efficient cargo-handling experience.

The procurement of the cranes started on May 6, 2024, and they were delivered on Sept 6, 2025.

The cranes will undergo a 45-day test before being fully operational. — Bernama
