Brazil’s Suape Industrial Port Complex has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in Malaysia’s Port Klang with Westports Malaysia and Northport, part of the MMC Port Holding Group, during its trade mission to Southeast Asia.

The agreements with Westports Malaysia and Northport pave the way for the creation of new long-distance maritime routes, the expansion of logistics connections, and the prospecting of new investments.

Armando Monteiro Bisneto, CEO of Suape, signed the two memoranda on behalf of the Pernambuco port, formalising the strategic alliances. On behalf of Westports, the document was signed by the CEO, Vijaya Kumar, and on behalf of MMC Ports, by the CEO, Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof.

“The memoranda go beyond a formal act. The documents establish a formal and permanent channel of communication between Suape and Port Klang, strengthening the interconnection between the two port complexes,” said Armando Bisneto.

“In the case of Westports, the terminal pointed out the possibility of enabling long-distance maritime routes between the two ports, in addition to future strategic projects that could represent a significant advance for Suape and Pernambuco,” added the Port of Suape executive.

In 2025, Westports Malaysia handled nearly 12 million teu with an expansion project to reach 28 million teu. In addition, it handled 12.8 million tonnes of conventional cargo, surpassing its own previous records.

Northport, for its part, recorded the movement of 3.8 million teu last year, an increase of 3.8% over 2024. In the conventional cargo segment, Northport broke records with more than 12.9 million tonnes in 2025, surpassing the previous year’s performance.
