International Container Terminal Services Inc. is set to construct a berth in the Manila International Container Terminal to increase its capacity in anticipation of increased demand. The new berth, “Berth 8”, will serve Megamax ships with a maximum capacity of 18,000 TEU.
The ICTSI is making an investment of $287 million in this project. The construction of this berth will be done in two phases. After its completion, the new berth will add 400 m of the quay and up to 12 hectares of yard area. The water along the berth will be dredged up to a depth of 13.5 m which may be further deepened to 15m. Berth 8 is also slated to be equipped with 4 quay cranes, delivered by 2025.
When completed, the entire build and berths 1 to 7 will have a total berth length of 2300m. Berths 6 and 7 started operations in 2012 and 2014, respectively. These berths can accommodate neo-Panamax vessels with a maximum capacity of up to 15,500 TEUs. In 2021, berth 7 was recently expanded by 150 m, which makes a 600 continuous quay when coupled with berth 6. Aside from the construction of the new berth 8, ICTSI has also parallelly commenced the modernization of berths 1 to 5 along with their respective yard areas. It also includes installing additional reefer tracks to accommodate 300 TEU of reefer cargo by April this year.
