On 18 July 2022, a Senior Researcher, Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) from the Centre for Maritime Security and Diplomacy (MSD), talked on the topic ‘Regulations Related to the Transportation of Palm Oil Products’ at the Operational & Commercial Aspects of Palm Oil Trade hosted by The Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia (PORAM) in collaboration with Bursa Malaysia Derivatives. Over 100 participants from the industry attended the event. It aims to provide participants with an overview of the palm oil trade’s various operational and commercial aspects.
In his talk, Cdr Ang gave an overview of the shipping industry, its cabotage policy & the Malaysian Shipping Master Plan (MSMP). He then talked about international and domestic regulations governing the sea transportation of palm oil products, namely the UNCLOS, IMO instruments, and the MSO 1952. He also dwelled on the revised MARPOL Annex II regulations, which will be another non-barrier challenge against Malaysia’s palm oil industry.
Malaysia’s palm oil export to the overseas market depends on shipping. However, the transportation of its products by sea is heavily regulated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Malaysia has been a member since 1971 and was elected as a Council Member again last year.
