The port of Long Beach joined the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES). ARCHES is a public-private partnership formed to procure newly available funding from a federal US government program. The end goal of ARCHES is to use the obtained capital to develop a market for Hydrogen in California.
ARCHES aims to secure funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2 Hubs) program. The H2 Hubs program will be the largest investment in the history of the U.S. Department of Energy so far.
The Port of Long Beach has set a goal of having zero emissions from all cargo-handling equipment by 2030 and zero emissions from all drayage trucks in its fleet by 2035. Hence the port of Long Beach stands to greatly benefit from the formation of a Hydrogen hub in California and has joined ARCHES.
Mario Cordero, Executive Director for the port of Long Beach stated that the establishment of a green hydrogen hub in California would be a great help in achieving the port’s zero-emission goals. He went on to state that the partnership of the port of Long Beach with ARCHES was necessary for mustering as much leverage as possible to obtain a share of the total $8 billion in funding that is available under the H2 Hubs program.
