The Government of India has approved the construction of two new terminals in Deendayal Port, Kandla. One of the terminals is a multipurpose berth and the other is a container terminal. The two terminals will equip Deendayal port for handling Next generation deep berth vessels and greatly expand the port’s capabilities.
The cost of the project is estimated to be around $720 million. The government will be partnering with private entities for the construction of these terminals. The government is offering a concession period of 30 years, extendable by 20 more years for the concessioner that receives either of the two projects.
The container terminal, once complete, will have a capacity of 2.19 million TEU per annum, whereas the multipurpose cargo terminal will have an optimal operating capacity of 18.33 MPTA.
The proposed container terminal and the multipurpose berth will be able to accommodate larger vessels with a deeper draught than has been possible to date at the port. Vessels ranging from 6000 TEU to 21,000 TEU and having a draught ranging from 14 to 18m can be accommodated at the container terminal. Whereas vessels ranging from 100,000 dwt to 210,000 dwt and having draughts ranging from 15m to 18m can be accommodated at the multipurpose berth.
The new terminals are expected to significantly reduce congestion at the port and reduce the turnaround time for vessels. The container terminal at Tuna-Tekra will also have a strategic advantage as it will be best positioned to serve the vast hinterlands in the northern part of India.
