The German Government is funding the installation of a Rotor Sail on Baltrader’s new cement carrier CemCommander this summer.
The project attracted funding from the German Federal Government’s Directive “Sustainable Modernization of Coastal Vessels” (NaMKü) programmed in January 2023, with delivery of the rotor sail expected in summer 2024.
The wind assisted propulsion system is expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 14% using a single 24 m by 4 m rotor sail, and has earned the vessel a WPS2 class notation from Bureau Veritas. CemCommander is will be delivered by Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard (Group) and was designed by SDC Ship Design & Consultants in Hamburg.

Baltrader said the ship will be flagged in Europe, commercially operated by Baltrader Schifffahrtsgesellschaft with technical management by BRISE Bereederungs which oversees the whole Baltrader fleet.
Norsepower’s Rotor Sail is a modernised version of the Flettner Rotor, a cylindrical sail which draws power from the ship to rotate, generating thrust from aerodynamic effects. The company has announced a flurry of orders this month, including the largest wind rotor order of 18 units for vessels for Airbus, and a retrofit order for an Olderndorff post-panamax bulker.
